FAQ

Is UIPHP only open to Iowa residents, and do I need to attend college in Iowa?

Yes, UIPHP is open only to applicants who meet the program’s Iowa residency requirements. However, you do not need to attend the University of Iowa or another Iowa institution. Iowa residents attending colleges outside the state may apply.

Review the Iowa Board of Regents resident classification information linked under Eligibility Requirements, specifically the College of Medicine residency provisions used by UIPHP. Contact the program team if you are unsure whether you qualify.

What is UIPHP, and what will I do during the program?

The University of Iowa Pathways to Health Professions (UIPHP) is a free, four-week summer enrichment program for undergraduate Iowa residents interested in becoming physicians or physician associates.

Participants engage in academic enrichment, hands-on clinical workshops, clinical observation, community engagement, mentorship, and admissions preparation. Individualized advising helps participants develop a roadmap toward medical or physician associate schools.

Who is eligible to apply?

Applicants must:

  • Meet the program’s Iowa residency requirements.

  • Be currently enrolled as a college sophomore or junior with 30–90 credit hours.

  • Have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0.

  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

  • Not have previously participated in UIPHP.

Community college students are encouraged to apply if they meet these requirements. High school students are not eligible solely because they have earned college credits.

How much does UIPHP cost?

UIPHP is free to participate in, including on-campus housing for the duration of the program. Participants will receive a $500 food allowance and an $800 stipend upon successfully completing the program. Some meals will also be provided during special events.

Are meals provided?

Participants are responsible for their own meals during the program and should plan and budget accordingly using the $500 food allowance. Some meals will be provided during special events. The separate $800 stipend is awarded upon successfully completing the program and should not be relied on to cover meals during the program.

Housing Move in and move out

Participants must move into Petersen Hall on June 13, 2027, by 2 p.m. and move out on July 10, 2027, by 11 a.m. Please plan your travel around these requirements. Additional check-in and check-out instructions will be shared with accepted participants.

Why does UIPHP focus on students with 30–90 credit hours, and what if dual enrollment credits put me above that range?

UIPHP focuses on students at the sophomore or junior stage so they have time to use the program’s guidance to plan coursework, gain meaningful experiences, build mentoring relationships, and prepare for professional school applications.

If credits earned in high school put you above the 90-credit maximum, we encourage you to apply and explain your circumstances. The admissions committee may consider exceptions to the credit-hour requirement on a case-by-case basis through holistic review. Exceptions are not guaranteed, and applicants must still meet the Iowa residency requirement.

How does the holistic application review process work?

The admissions committee reviews each completed application individually, considering academic preparation alongside the applicant’s experiences, background, goals, and opportunities available to them. This includes GPA, the personal statement, the letter of recommendation, and interest in medicine or the physician associate profession.

The committee also considers economically or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds and an interest in social determinants of health. Holistic review helps the committee understand each applicant’s circumstances and how UIPHP could support their preparation. Meeting eligibility requirements does not guarantee admission.

What if my GPA is below 3.0?

UIPHP’s minimum overall GPA requirement is 3.0. If your GPA falls below this requirement, contact the program team before applying to discuss your circumstances.

Do I need previous health care experience or a firm career decision?

Previous clinical, volunteer, or research experience is not an eligibility requirement. You should have an interest in becoming a physician or physician associate, but you do not need to have made a final decision between these careers.

Your application should explain your interests, the experiences that have shaped your goals, and how UIPHP could support your preparation.

What should I include in my personal statement?

Explain your interest in becoming a physician or physician associate, the experiences that have shaped your goals, and how UIPHP would support your educational and career preparation.

Who should I contact with questions?

Contact Daniela Sanchez, Pathways Program Coordinator within the Office of Education Support, at daniela-sanchez@uiowa.edu.

Is travel assistance available?

Yes. UIPHP will offer need-based travel assistance, and accepted participants may apply for up to $250 to help cover travel expenses. More information about eligibility and how to apply will be shared with accepted participants.
