UIPHP’s College of Medicine curriculum is designed to help scholars explore careers as physicians and physician associates while building a personalized roadmap toward medical or physician associate school.

Career Exploration: Scholars will learn about the MD and PA professions directly from Carver College of Medicine faculty, healthcare professionals, current students, and program leaders. Sessions will help scholars understand each career path, educational requirements, professional responsibilities, and areas of practice.

Hands-On Clinical Learning: Scholars will develop practical skills through interactive experiences such as suturing, casting, surgical gowning and gloving, CPR training, clinical simulations, and other skills-based workshops.

Interprofessional Education: Scholars will learn about the roles and responsibilities of professionals across the healthcare system. Through collaborative activities and case-based learning, they will explore how physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and other professionals work together to deliver comprehensive, patient-centered care.

Clinical Observation: Scholars will have opportunities to observe physicians, physician associates, and other healthcare professionals in clinical settings. These experiences will provide insight into patient care, healthcare teams, and the daily responsibilities of medical professionals.

Community Engagement: Through partnerships with organizations such as the University of Iowa Mobile Clinic, Proteus, and United Way, scholars will participate in service-learning experiences and explore how community conditions and access to resources influence health outcomes.

Admissions and Application Preparation: Scholars will meet with admissions representatives to learn about medical and PA school prerequisites, application processes, timelines, and expectations. Workshops will also cover personal statements, interviewing, and strategies for developing a strong application.

Individualized Advising: Each scholar will participate in one-on-one advising sessions with program leadership in the Carver College of Medicine. These meetings will help scholars reflect on their goals, identify areas for growth, and develop an individualized roadmap toward matriculation into medical or physician associate school.
